Israeli soldiers murdered at least 22 people in south Lebanon on Sunday after a pullout deadline passed and hundreds attempted to return to their homes despite Israeli military orders.
Recall that Israel said on Friday that it will maintain soldiers in the south beyond the Sunday deadline set by a US-brokered truce that ended last year’s battle with Hezbollah.
It also stated that Lebanon has yet to properly execute clauses mandating the removal of Hezbollah weapons from south Lebanon and the deployment of the Lebanese army.
Lebanon’s US-backed military, which claimed one of its members killed by Israeli forces on Sunday, has accused Israel of stalling with its pullout.
The Hezbollah-Israel confrontation was fought concurrently with the Gaza war, culminating in a huge Israeli onslaught that displaced over a million people in Lebanon and severely crippled the Iran-backed organization.
According to Lebanon’s health ministry, 22 people were killed and 124 were injured in various areas across the south as a consequence of what it claimed as Israeli assaults on locals attempting to enter their still-occupied cities.
The Israeli military, for its part, stated that its forces operating in southern Lebanon fired warning shots to eliminate threats in many places where suspects were seen approaching the troops.
Hassan Fadlallah, a Hezbollah politician, emphasized Lebanon’s adherence to the ceasefire agreement, claiming that Israel had turned against it with US help.
The White House stated on Friday that a brief temporary truce extension was urgently required.
