The Israel Defence Forces (IDF) announced the successful recovery of Aviv Atzili’s body from Gaza during a targeted overnight military operation.
Atzili, a civilian abducted by Hamas militants during the October 7 attacks, had been held captive for over eight months before being located by Israeli special forces.
Military officials stated the operation was conducted based on precise intelligence gathered over several weeks.
The recovery mission involved ground troops operating deep in Gaza territory, supported by aerial surveillance and drone coverage. Atzili’s body has been transferred to Israeli authorities for forensic examination and eventual release to his family for burial.
The IDF confirmed Atzili was already deceased when located, though it did not specify when or how he died. His wife, previously released during the November hostage exchange, was notified of the recovery by military representatives.
The operation marks the latest in Israel’s ongoing efforts to account for all remaining captives still held in Gaza.
Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu praised the military’s “extraordinary courage and precision” in recovering Atzili, vowing to continue operations until all hostages are returned. The recovery comes amid stalled ceasefire negotiations, with Hamas yet to respond to Israel’s latest proposal.
Atzili’s family released a statement expressing gratitude to security forces while mourning their “irreplaceable loss.”
