Israeli forces have carried out a military strike on Yemen’s main airport located in the capital city, Sanaa, in what appears to be a significant escalation in regional tensions.
The strike, which reportedly targeted key infrastructure at the airport, marks one of the most direct actions by Israel in Yemen, a country already dealing with years of internal conflict and humanitarian crises.
According to reports from regional media and officials in Yemen, explosions were heard near the Sanaa International Airport late Monday night.
Eyewitnesses described seeing plumes of smoke rising from the vicinity of the airport shortly after the reported airstrike. The full extent of the damage remains unclear, but initial sources suggest that runways and parts of the airport’s facilities may have been affected.
The Israeli forces has not issued an official statement regarding the strike, but security analysts believe it may be connected to increasing threats from Houthi forces in Yemen, who have shown support for Hamas amid the ongoing conflict between Israel and Gaza. In recent months, Houthi fighters have launched several missile and drone attacks aimed at Israel, prompting fears of a broader regional war.
The government in Sanaa, which is under Houthi control, condemned the attack and accused Israeli forces of violating Yemen’s sovereignty. Houthi leaders warned of retaliation and stated that this strike would not go unanswered.
This development has raised concerns in the international community, with calls for restraint from both sides. The United Nations and other global actors have urged for de-escalation to prevent the conflict in the Middle East from spilling further into the Arabian Peninsula.
