The Jigawa State Environmental Protection Agency (JISEPA) has seized expired, contaminated, and improperly stored goods valued at ₦14,447,650 during a comprehensive sanitation enforcement operation across the state.
The agency’s Managing Director, Sanitarian Adamu Sabo, disclosed this development while briefing journalists, explaining that the exercise covered all 27 local government areas.
Sabo stated that the operation targeted markets, shops, warehouses, and other commercial establishments to ensure compliance with environmental health regulations and to remove products considered hazardous for human consumption or use.
The crackdown was conducted under the legal provisions of Section 5(1)(2) of the Jigawa State Environmental Protection Law 2009 (as amended) and Section 125(1) of the newly enacted Jigawa State Public Health Security Law 2024.
He clarified that all confiscated items underwent strict legal procedures, including verification, documentation, and formal authorisation, before being destroyed in line with public health guidelines.
“This action is not punitive but preventive—aimed at protecting the health and safety of our people while upholding environmental and sanitary standards in the state,” Sabo emphasised.
The agency chief highlighted ongoing collaborations with market associations, traders, and community leaders to promote awareness and ensure widespread compliance with hygiene and public health regulations.
He urged residents to remain vigilant and report any instances of unhygienic practices or the sale of substandard products to the relevant authorities.
The enforcement exercise underscores the state government’s commitment to safeguarding public health by eliminating potentially harmful goods from circulation. Authorities have warned that similar operations will continue as part of sustained efforts to maintain food safety and environmental hygiene across Jigawa State.
