Biden reveals next action from US as rebels take over Syria government

Joe Biden, the President of the United States of America, has made clear that his administration will work with “all Syrian groups” to facilitate political transition.

This follows the ouster of President Bashar al-Assad of Syria.

Islamic fighters in Syria overthrew Al-Assad’s regime over the weekend.

On Sunday, rebels invaded Damascus and seized control of the country’s capital, bringing an end to Assad’s family’s iron-fisted reign after almost 13 years of civil conflict in a momentous event for the Middle East.

However, Biden said that his administration “will engage with all Syrian groups, including within the process led by the United Nations, to establish a transition away from the Assad regime toward independent, sovereign Syria with a new constitution.”

When asked what should happen to al-Assad, who apparently fled to Russia, Biden told reporters that “Assad should be held accountable.”

Biden described al-Assad’s demise as a “moment of historic opportunity” in Syria.

“The fall of the regime is a fundamental act of justice,” Biden said, speaking from the White House.

“It’s a moment of historic opportunity for the long-suffering people of Syria,” Biden added.
