Kano govt pledges severe measures against sponsors of thuggery and phone snatching

The Kano State Government has declared a decisive crackdown on individuals financing and orchestrating criminal activities, particularly thuggery and phone snatching, across the state.

Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf issued the stern warning during an emergency security council meeting, vowing that his administration would no longer tolerate the activities of criminal sponsors whom he accused of undermining public safety.

Security agencies have been directed to intensify surveillance operations to identify and apprehend both the perpetrators and their backers.

The governor emphasised that those found guilty of sponsoring or enabling these crimes would face the full wrath of the law, including possible prosecution under the state’s revised penal code.

This renewed offensive comes amid growing public outcry over rising street crimes, with recent incidents of violent phone snatching causing particular concern among residents.

As part of the security strategy, the government announced plans to establish dedicated courts to expedite trials for suspects arrested for thuggery and related offences.

Community leaders and traditional rulers have also been mobilised to support intelligence gathering efforts and discourage youth involvement in criminal activities.

The governor reaffirmed his commitment to restoring Kano’s reputation as one of Nigeria’s most peaceful commercial hubs, urging residents to cooperate with security operatives.

While acknowledging the socioeconomic factors contributing to youth criminality, the administration stressed that sponsorship of violence like thuggery would no longer be tolerated under any circumstances. Security forces have been placed on high alert across all 44 local government areas to enforce the new directives.
