Nasiru Yusuf Gawuna of the All Progressives Congress, APC, has been declared the winner of the Kano governorship election by the Kano State Governorship Election Petition Tribunal.

The tribunal issued its final judgement after deleting a certain number of votes cast for the Kano Governor, Abba Kabir Yusuf, the candidate of the New Nigeria People’s Party, NNPP.

The presiding judge, Justice Oluyemi Akintan Osadabey, stated that the NNPP’s vote advantage was insufficient to give Governor Yusuf victory.

It claimed that some of Yusus’ votes were invalid.

Gawuna of the APC won all three grounds brought to the tribunal, which included overvoting, illegal votes, and not being a party member at the time of the NNPP primary election.

The Tribunal directed the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, to retrieve Yusuf’s Certificate of Return and award it to Gawuna as the election’s initial winner.

She stated that the law requires one to be a bona fide member of a political party before being able to fight elections, and that in the instance of Abba Kabir Yusuf, he was not a member of the NNPP 30 days before the general elections.

After the ballots were counted, Gawuna was proclaimed the winner with 897,000 votes, while Abba received 850,000 votes.
