A 14-year-old girl in Katsina State has been exposed as the mastermind behind a staged kidnapping after she allegedly abducted her younger sister and fabricated her abduction.
Police authorities revealed the shocking incident following investigations into what initially appeared to be a routine kidnapping case.
According to police reports, the 14-year-old girl had taken her sister to an undisclosed location before reporting herself as a kidnapping victim. The elaborate scheme unravelled when security operatives noticed inconsistencies in her statements during interrogation.
Further investigation led to the recovery of the younger sibling unharmed at a relative’s house in a neighbouring community.
Katsina police command spokesperson confirmed the incident, stating that the teenager had orchestrated the plot to extort money from her parents.
The motive reportedly stemmed from family disputes and the older sister’s desire for financial gain. Authorities have since reunited the younger child with her parents while the 14-year-old girl is undergoing counselling and legal procedures.
Local authorities have warned against false kidnapping reports such as this girl’s story, which not only waste security resources but also create unnecessary panic in communities already grappling with genuine security challenges. The police have pledged to handle the case with sensitivity, given the minor’s age, while ensuring appropriate measures are taken to prevent recurrence.
