Former Ekiti State Governor Kayode Fayemi has voiced strong criticism against President Bola Tinubu’s administration, warning that current economic challenges may cost the ruling party votes in the 2027 elections.
In a video circulating online, Fayemi expressed concerns about widespread hunger and deteriorating infrastructure under the federal government’s watch.
Speaking in Yoruba during what appeared to be a public gathering, Fayemi stated: “Nigerians are unhappy with the federal government due to hunger and financial hardship.”
The former governor specifically highlighted the poor condition of federal roads in Ekiti State, citing examples of the Efon Alaaye-Erio and Omuo-Ilasa-Ayedun routes. He revealed that the state government had previously spent between N18-20 billion to reconstruct some federal roads without reimbursement.
“Had the federal government refunded these costs, Governor Biodun Oyebanji could have completed the second phase of the Ado-Ekiti to Iyin-Ekiti road and extended it to Aramoko,” Fayemi added.
The event was attended by Ekiti State House of Assembly Speaker Adeoye Aribasoye and lawmaker Tope Longe, who shared the platform with the former governor.
Fayemi’s remarks come days after his notable absence at a political rally in Ado-Ekiti, where Tinubu and Governor Oyebanji received endorsements. The former governor’s comments reflect growing discontent within some APC circles about the administration’s handling of economic and infrastructure challenges.
While not explicitly calling for opposition to the ruling party, Kayode Fayemi’s assessment suggests potential electoral consequences if current conditions persist. His criticism of federal road maintenance aligns with longstanding complaints by state governments about bearing the cost of federal infrastructure projects without compensation.
