The Kenyan Senate impeached Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua.
Despite Gachagua’s lawyer, Paul Muite, pleading with the legislators to postpone the procedures, they voted Thursday evening.
Muite stated that Gachagua was hospitalized after becoming ill just hours before the vote was scheduled.
Amason Kingi, the Kenyan Senate Speaker, announced that Gachagua had until 5 p.m. local time to arrive.
The Kenyan Senators impeached the vice president because his health prevented him from attending the hearing.
The 59-year-old is Kenya’s first deputy president to face impeachment.
At least 53 senators agreed to sustain the first accusation.
Gachagua, who faced eleven allegations, was impeached on five counts.
The charges include shareholding, undermining judicial independence, the National Cohesion and Integrity Act 4, crimes under the National Cohesion Act, and gross misconduct (public attacks on the National Security Intelligence Service).
In June, Gachagua accused the director of the intelligence service of failing to adequately update President William Ruto and the administration on the size of large protests over unpopular tax increases.
The vice president’s actions were viewed as an attempt to undermine the president.
In all, 281 MPs supported the expulsion move, while 44 opposed it. One MP refrained from voting.
