The Lagos State Government has ordered the immediate closure of Global International College, a private school in Lekki, after uncovering serious environmental violations that posed significant public health risks.
Officials from the Ministry of the Environment and Water Resources took decisive action after discovering the institution was discharging untreated sewage and wastewater directly into the surrounding community.
According to an official statement, investigators found the school operating an illegal pumping system that diverted raw faecal sludge and contaminated water into public drainage channels.
The improper waste disposal created persistent foul odours and unsanitary conditions affecting nearby residents. Environment Commissioner Tokunbo Wahab confirmed the enforcement operation was conducted on Saturday following the school management’s repeated failure to comply with multiple earlier warnings.
Wahab stressed that the state government maintains zero tolerance for environmental violations, particularly those threatening community health.
“All environmental nuisance and pollution portends grave dangers to public health and will be met with appropriate sanctions,” the commissioner warned. He emphasised that offenders could face severe penalties, including potential criminal prosecution, regardless of their social or institutional status.
The shutdown serves as the latest demonstration of Lagos authorities’ crackdown on environmental offenders. The commissioner urged all institutions and residents to adhere strictly to waste management regulations, noting that compliance monitoring would continue across the state.
Officials have advised affected parents to contact the school administration for updates while the facility remains closed pending full remediation of the environmental hazards and approval from regulatory authorities.
This enforcement action highlights growing government efforts to combat sanitation violations in Nigeria’s commercial capital, where improper waste disposal remains an ongoing public health challenge.
