The Lagos State Government has ordered the immediate closure of Dowen College, a private school located in Lekki Phase 1, following the discovery of improperly disposed waste materials linked to the institution.

The decision was announced by the Commissioner for Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, who described the act as a clear violation of the state’s environmental regulations.

Wahab strongly condemned the school’s failure to adhere to proper waste management protocols, emphasising that such disregard for environmental laws would not be tolerated.

He warned that the state government would take strict measures against any institution or organisation found flouting its waste disposal policies.

“The Lagos State Environmental Sanitation Corps has been directed to enforce the closure of the school premises,” Wahab stated.

“We will not hesitate to take decisive action against violators, as maintaining a clean, safe, and healthy environment for all residents remains a top priority.”

The commissioner reiterated the government’s commitment to enforcing environmental laws without compromise, stressing that improper waste disposal poses serious health and environmental risks.

He urged all institutions, businesses, and residents to comply with waste management regulations to avoid similar sanctions.

Dowen College’s closure comes as part of the state’s broader efforts to promote sustainable waste management practices and ensure compliance with environmental standards.

The government has vowed to intensify monitoring and enforcement across Lagos to prevent future violations and uphold public health and environmental safety.
