The Lagos State Government, through the LASBCA, has come up with plans to destroy all identified unlawful structures/shanties, totalling over 30, at Ogombo, in the state’s Eti-Osa Local Government Area, LG.A.
While speaking to the media at the agency’s headquarters in Ikeja GRA, Lagos, Arc. Gbolahan Oki, general manager of the LASBCA, revealed this over the weekend.
Oki said that the action was required in order to sanitise and encourage adherence to the state’s building requirements in the construction industry.
Moreover, he said that land developers and building owners who unlawfully obtained property erected the majority of the illegal buildings and shanties in the region on public property.
General Manager added that despite attempts by competent government entities to remove and discourage the unlawful occupiers on the site without success, the issue of illegal building on public property in the Ogombo region began some years ago.
He stated:
“This issue has been going on around Ogombo, Eti-Osa area of the state in the last five years, and I have been on it for one and a half year. Hence, we are doing the needful by removing the illegal structures because the government must perform its duty.”
The owner or developer of such properties must be served with the required Statutory Notices, such as Contravention, Stop-Work, Quit, and destruction Notices, prior to the destruction of any unlawful construction or shanty, he added.
Oki, who bemoaned the rate of illegal sales of government lands by land-grabbers to owners and developers without proper documentation and disregard for State Building Codes, urged the construction community to always carry out proper and relevant checks to find out which lands are available for building construction in the state.
“Due diligence must be followed when acquiring land for building construction in the State because the government will henceforth remove buildings that are built on illegally acquired government lands,” he said.
