Former Chelsea manager Frank Lampard has revealed he wanted to sign West Ham United midfielder Declan Rice while in charge of the Blues. Rice, according to Lampard, was his main target because he saw promise in him as a Chelsea captain.
The Chelsea legend revealed this in an interview with Steven Bartlett for a podcast.
“I wanted to bring Declan Rice to Chelsea when I was there as a coach before, he was my top target,” he said.
“I was like… this kid, Declan, is going to be the captain of Chelsea for the next 10 years.”
Rice is currently linked with a move to Chelsea’s city rivals, Arsenal, this summer.
The 24-year-old captained West Ham to European glory last season, winning the UEFA Conference League.
