The Lagos State Independent Electoral Commission (LASIEC) has announced it will present certificates of return to newly elected local government chairmen and councillors on Wednesday, July 16, 2025.
The ceremony, originally scheduled for Tuesday, was postponed due to the public holiday declared by the Federal Government to mourn the passing of former President Muhammadu Buhari.
Justice Bola Okikiolu-Ighile (retd.), Chairman of LASIEC, confirmed the adjustment in a telephone conversation, stating that the event was moved to the next working day following the national day of mourning.
“It was supposed to hold on Tuesday,” she explained, “but due to the public holiday on that day, it has been rescheduled to Wednesday.”
An unnamed LASIEC official also verified the details, noting that the presentation would take place at the commission’s headquarters in Sabo, Yaba. All elected officials, including chairmen and councillors from the 20 Local Government Areas and 37 Local Council Development Areas (LCDAs), are expected to attend.
The announcement follows the July 12 local government elections, in which the All Progressives Congress (APC) secured a near-total victory, winning all 57 chairmanship seats and 375 out of 376 councillorship positions. The only exception was Ward D in Yaba LCDA, where the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) candidate, Babatunde Dosunmu, defeated his APC rival.
Justice Okikiolu-Ighile officially declared the election results on Sunday at the LASIEC headquarters. The rescheduled certificate presentation marks the final administrative step in the electoral process, formalising the mandate of the newly elected officials as they prepare to assume office.
