A terrible conflict erupted in the Barkuta community, Beji district, Bosso local government area of Niger State, killing an indeterminate number of people.
The violence broke out on Tuesday morning between the indigenous Gbagyi people and herders, leaving several individuals seriously hurt and homes damaged.
Though the facts of the confrontation are unclear, it is believed that the incident began when herdsmen killed a renowned farmer, simply known as Alhaji, who had opposed animals encroaching on his field.
It was learned that Alhaji filed his complaints with the herders’ settlement on Monday evening over the occurrence on his field.
It was learned that after Alhaji failed to return from his excursion to the herdsmen’s settlement on Monday evening, community members organized a search team and discovered his dead in the bush on Tuesday morning.
Enraged by the finding, the community reportedly gathered and assaulted the herdsmen’s enclaves, resulting in a clash that took numerous lives and injured more.
It was also discovered that the neighborhood is currently seized by dread and anxiety, leading inhabitants to evacuate in expectation of reprisal assaults.
When reached, the state Police Command, through Public Relations Officer SP Wasiu Abiodun, acknowledged the event but stated that the information was presently murky.
He added that, “the command will issue a statement on it when we have more information on the cause of the confrontation between the farmers and headers, including the number of casualties in Bosso local government.”
