The International Press Centre (IPC) has called on journalists covering electoral processes to strictly observe professional codes and regulations in their reporting.
The appeal was made during a one-day training workshop for Northwest journalists held in Kano, organised under the European Union Support to Democratic Governance in Nigeria program.
IPC Executive Director Lanre Arogundade emphasised the importance of ethical reporting, particularly during election periods when misinformation and external pressures often compromise journalistic integrity.
The training brought together selected journalists from Kano, Jigawa, Katsina and Kaduna States to address challenges in election coverage.
Participants identified multiple obstacles facing reporters, including security threats, political interference, censorship, limited access to information, and the growing problem of fake news.
These challenges, according to Arogundade, underscore the need for media professionals to adhere strictly to the Nigerian Media Code of Election Coverage.
“The revised code provides clear guidelines for safe and professional election reporting,” Arogundade stated, encouraging journalists to utilise the document either through digital platforms or printed copies.
He stressed that compliance with these journalists’ standards would help minimise risks while ensuring accurate and balanced reporting.
