Organised labour in the country’s power sector has shut down the electricity sector.
Aside from the national grid, the electricity producing and distribution sub-sectors have also been shut down.
Dominic Igwebike, Acting General Secretary of the National Union of Electricity Employees (NUEE), informed Vanguard that the electricity sector has been shut down.
He says, “The national grid, DISCOs, and GENCOs are all under lockdown.
“This complies with the directive from our umbrella bodies, the Nigeria Labour Congress, NLC, and the Trade Union Congress of Nigeria, TUC.”
In a related incident, the Nigeria Union of Petroleum and Natural Gas Workers (NUPENG) has suspended all loading activities at petroleum depots in Lagos.
This was in accordance with the strike direction issued by the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC).
However, Vanguard was informed that all loaded vehicles, including aircraft terminals, were permitted to depart the depots for safety reasons.
According to a labour leader:
“We don’t want to keep a loaded truck within the depot because it is highly flammable.
“Safety is very important.
“We allowed loaded trucks to leave the depots for safer areas, including the aviation terminals.”
