The Northern Awareness Network (NAN) has strongly criticised Senator Lawal Usman Adamu for submitting a petition to the International Criminal Court (ICC) concerning a recent by-election in Kaduna State.
The group described the senator’s action as a “misguided” effort that severely distorts the core mandate of the international judicial body.
In a statement released by its chairman, Salihu Sulaiman, the network argued that invoking the ICC for a local electoral dispute trivialises the institution’s solemn mission and undermines established mechanisms for international justice.
The group emphasised that the ICC was specifically established to address the world’s most severe crimes, including genocide, war crimes, and crimes against humanity.
Equating a by-election in Kaduna to the atrocities committed in Rwanda or Darfur, the statement read, is not only irresponsible but also deeply offensive to the victims of those horrific events.
NAN characterised the petition as a “theatrical display” intended more for gaining political attention than for genuinely addressing the pressing developmental needs of the senator’s constituents in the Kaduna Central Senatorial District.
The group expressed concern that instead of focusing on critical issues such as poverty, insecurity, education, and infrastructure, the senator is engaging in political posturing that has no tangible benefit for the electorate.
This behaviour, NAN warned, ridicules the office he holds and erodes public trust in democratic institutions.
Furthermore, the network criticised Senator Adamu’s legislative record, noting an apparent absence of meaningful bills, motions, or constituency projects throughout his tenure.
This lack of tangible achievement, combined with his current actions, suggests a fixation on personal political survival rather than dedicated service.
The Northern Awareness Network called on the senator to reconsider his approach and refocus his efforts on substantive engagement with the real issues affecting the people he was elected to represent.
