The National Assembly has announced an immediate suspension of all legislative activities in honour of former President Muhammadu Buhari, who passed away on Sunday in London after a prolonged illness.
The decision, which halts parliamentary proceedings until Tuesday, July 22, 2025, was communicated through an official statement by the Clerk of the National Assembly, Kamoru Ogunlana.
The directive, issued on behalf of Senate President Godswill Akpabio and House Speaker Tajudeen Abbas, calls on all lawmakers to reschedule their engagements to participate fully in the burial activities of the former leader.
“This period of mourning allows us to properly honour a man who dedicated his life to serving our nation,” the statement read.
In their condolence message, the National Assembly leadership extended sympathies to multiple stakeholders: the federal government, the people of Nigeria, the Katsina State government, and particularly to Buhari’s immediate family, including his wives, children, and extended relatives.
The statement highlighted Buhari’s enduring legacy, noting his “unwavering commitment to Nigeria’s unity and his remarkable integrity” as qualities that distinguished his leadership.
The parliamentary tribute concluded with a prayer for divine mercy, asking that “Almighty Allah grant his soul eternal rest in Aljannatul Firdaus.”
This suspension of legislative business reflects the deep respect the nation’s lawmakers hold for the former president, whose eight-year tenure (2015-2023) followed an earlier term as military head of state in the 1980s.
The move mirrors similar gestures across government institutions, as Nigeria prepares for a week of memorial activities to honour one of its most consequential leaders.
The National Assembly’s decision underscores how Buhari’s passing has temporarily united the political class beyond partisan lines, with the legislature joining other arms of government in observing this period of national mourning.
