The National Commission for Colleges of Education (NCCE) has announced the closure of 22 unaccredited Colleges of Education operating illegally across Nigeria.
This decisive action is the result of a comprehensive crackdown targeting substandard tertiary institutions that fail to meet the country’s educational requirements. Although the commission has not publicly released the specific names of the affected colleges, it confirmed that these institutions were shut down after failing to meet established standards during a thorough evaluation process.
The NCCE conducted extensive assessments, including detailed personnel audits and financial monitoring, across all 21 federal colleges of education. These evaluations were critical in identifying institutions operating without proper authorisation or adequate academic and infrastructural resources.
In a statement published on its official website, the commission emphasised its commitment to upholding educational quality and eliminating illegal operators that undermine the integrity of the nation’s academic credentials.
This initiative is in direct alignment with recent directives from President Bola Tinubu, who has called on major educational regulatory bodies, including the NCCE, the National Universities Commission, and the National Board for Technical Education, to intensify efforts against certificate mills and unauthorised institutions.
Represented by Rakiya Ilyasu, the Director of University Education at the Federal Ministry of Education, at the 14th convocation of the National Open University of Nigeria, the President highlighted the government’s dedication to preserving academic standards and eliminating fraud within the education sector.
President Tinubu reiterated the administration’s commitment to enhancing inter-agency collaboration among educational bodies such as the National Youth Service Corps, the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board, and others.
The goal is to improve systemic efficiency, ensure quality education, and completely eradicate forged certifications and unrecognised institutions, both domestically and internationally.
