Senator Ali Ndume, who represents Borno South in the National Assembly, has clarified that a recent Boko Haram attack targeted Buratai town in Borno State, not former Chief of Army Staff, Lieutenant General Tukur Buratai.

This clarification comes in response to widespread reports that suggested the attack was aimed directly at the retired army chief, who hails from the town.

Speaking on Monday in Abuja, Ndume explained that his earlier comments during a Sunday appearance on Channels Television were misunderstood.

While discussing the deteriorating security situation in Borno and across the country, he had mentioned that Buratai was attacked. He has now made it clear that he was referring to the town of Buratai and not the individual.

Ndume recounted that the assault occurred at the front operations base in Buratai town, where Boko Haram insurgents launched a coordinated attack.

Although soldiers mounted a defence, the insurgents managed to destroy several military assets and make away with critical equipment, including Mine-Resistant Ambush Protected Vehicles (MRAPs), tanks, and machine guns.

The senator expressed disappointment that some media outlets misinterpreted his remarks, leading to misinformation. He stressed the importance of accurate journalism, especially when reporting on sensitive security matters. According to him, such inaccuracies can mislead the public and damage reputations.

Ndume also used the opportunity to draw attention to the wider security challenges facing Nigeria.

He noted that the situation has become increasingly dire in many parts of the country, including the North-East, North-West, North-Central, and even the South-South, where economic sabotage like oil theft is prevalent. He observed that only the South-West appears to enjoy relative peace.

In his closing remarks, Ndume called on the federal government to intensify efforts to combat insurgency and other security threats.

He also urged media professionals to fact-check and verify their information to avoid spreading confusion, especially in an already tense national atmosphere.

In summary, Ndume emphasised that the Boko Haram attack was directed at the town of Buratai and its military installation, not at the former Chief of Army Staff. He urged the public and media to be cautious in their reporting to maintain trust and support effective national security responses.
