A total of 1,975 students have applied for just 500 bursary awards offered by Senator Jarigbe Agom, highlighting the high demand for educational support among students from Cross River North.
The N100,000 bursaries are designed for undergraduates under the age of 30 who are studying outside the state. Applications were submitted through a dedicated online portal, which was initially scheduled to remain open for 24 hours. However, due to an overwhelming response, the portal reached capacity within just 16 hours.
The bursary scheme is specifically for students from the five local government areas in Cross River North: Ogoja, Yala, Obanliku, Bekwarra, and Obudu. The selection committee managing the process has assured applicants that the system is transparent and free from political influence.
In a statement, the committee emphasised that the initiative is strictly focused on supporting education in the region, regardless of political or social affiliations.
Education stakeholders and observers have praised the bursary program as a timely intervention, particularly as many families struggle with the rising cost of education. The high number of applications reflects the pressing need for financial assistance among students pursuing higher education.
Senator Agom’s initiative aims to alleviate some of the financial burdens faced by students and their families while encouraging academic excellence. The committee is expected to review applications and announce the successful beneficiaries in due course.
The overwhelming response underscores the critical role such interventions play in fostering access to education, especially in regions where financial constraints often hinder academic progress.
