Members of the Legislative Council of Chanchaga Local Government Area in Niger State have officially suspended the council chairman, Alhaji Aminu Yakubu Ladan, following serious allegations of misconduct and mismanagement of public funds.

The suspension was announced in a letter dated 28 July 2025, signed by eight out of the ten council members, who cited a lack of accountability and incompetence as key reasons for their decision.

According to the letter, the suspension was carried out in line with the Niger State Local Government Law, particularly Sections 24 and 38 of Cap 77, to ensure proper governance and accountability within the council.

The lawmakers emphasised that the allegations against the chairman were severe and warranted immediate action. As stipulated in Section 31(2) of the same law, Ladan has been directed to step aside pending a full investigation into the accusations.

The suspended chairman has been given five days to prepare and submit a written defence addressing the allegations. Among the key issues raised were illegal allocation of market plots, refusal of directors to attend Legislative Council meetings, failure to present financial statements, and unauthorised awarding of contracts. The council members stressed that these actions undermined transparency and proper administration.

However, the suspension was not unanimous, as two council members, representing Nassarawa B Ward and the Majority Leader of Minna South Ward, declined to support the decision.

Despite this, the majority vote upheld the suspension, reinforcing the council’s commitment to accountability and adherence to due process. The investigation will determine the next course of action regarding the Chanchaga chairman’s tenure.
