The Niger State government has pledged decisive action against rising insecurity following the tragic killing of a student from Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida University (IBBU) by suspected bandits.

The victim, whose identity has not been officially released, was reportedly abducted along Lapai-Minna Road before being murdered by his captors.

Governor Umar Bago condemned the attack in strong terms, describing it as “a senseless act of violence that will not go unpunished.”

During an emergency security meeting in Minna, the governor ordered immediate reinforcement of security personnel along major roads and vulnerable communities surrounding tertiary institutions.

Security agencies have been directed to intensify patrols and implement stricter measures to protect students and residents.

The incident has sparked outrage among IBBU students and staff, with the university management calling for urgent government intervention to safeguard academic activities.

The Niger State Police Command confirmed it has launched a manhunt for the perpetrators, while military units have begun combing nearby forests known to harbor criminal elements.

This latest attack highlights the growing security challenges in Niger State, where educational institutions have increasingly become targets for kidnappers.

The state government announced plans to establish a special security task force dedicated to protecting schools and major transit routes. Governor Bago assured residents that his administration would deploy all necessary resources to restore order, urging communities to support security agencies with timely intelligence.

Parents and students have expressed cautious optimism about the new measures while calling for sustained action to prevent future tragedies. The state government has promised regular updates on security operations as it works to address the root causes of violence in the region.
