The Niger State Government has issued a warning to residents living in riverside areas, urging them to vacate their homes to avoid potential flooding.
The advisory comes as the rainy season intensifies, raising concerns about possible overflow from major rivers, including the Niger and Kaduna rivers. Authorities have emphasised the need for immediate action to prevent loss of life and property.
Officials from the State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA) have confirmed that water levels in the rivers are rising steadily, increasing the risk of flooding in low-lying communities.
Residents in these areas have been advised to move to higher ground or designated safe zones until the situation stabilises. The government has also directed local leaders to assist in relocating vulnerable families and ensuring compliance with the evacuation order.
In recent years, Niger State has experienced severe flooding, displacing thousands and causing significant damage to farmland and infrastructure.
The state government has reiterated its commitment to disaster preparedness but stressed that community cooperation is essential to minimising risks. Emergency response teams have been placed on standby to assist if needed.
The public has been encouraged to stay updated on weather forecasts and heed official warnings.
The government assured affected communities that measures are being taken to provide temporary shelters and relief materials for those displaced by the flooding. Residents were reminded that early action could save lives and reduce the impact of the impending disaster.
