Local vigilantes in Niger State clashed with armed bandits in a fierce gun battle, successfully rescuing nine kidnapped victims.

The confrontation occurred in a remote community where the bandits had been holding the captives.

According to eyewitnesses, the vigilantes, acting on intelligence, ambushed the criminals, leading to an intense exchange of gunfire before overpowering them.

The bandits, who had been terrorising the area, were forced to flee, abandoning their hostages.

The rescued victims, who had been held for several days, were immediately taken to a nearby medical facility for treatment and reunification with their families.

Community leaders praised the bravery of the vigilantes, emphasising their critical role in filling security gaps in the region.

Security analysts have noted the increasing reliance on local vigilante groups due to the persistent attacks by armed bandits in Niger State and other parts of northern Nigeria.

While these groups have recorded some successes, concerns remain about the need for better coordination with official security agencies to ensure more effective operations.

Authorities in Niger State have commended the vigilantes for their efforts and reiterated calls for improved security measures, including increased military presence and community policing initiatives.

Residents have also urged the government to provide more support to local defence groups, including training and equipment, to enhance their capacity to combat criminal activities.

The incident highlights the ongoing security challenges in the region and the resilience of local communities of Niger State in the face of banditry and kidnappings.
