The Niger State Independent Electoral Commission (NSIEC) has announced that a total of 805 candidates from 10 political parties will be contesting in the upcoming local government elections scheduled for November 1, 2025.
The elections will cover chairmanship, vice-chairmanship, and councillorship positions across the state’s 25 local government areas.
NSIEC Chairman, Engineer Mohammed Jibrin Imam, revealed this during the official flag-off of the campaign season in Minna. He stated that political parties are now permitted to begin public campaigns, which will continue until October 31.
According to him, 69 candidates are vying for chairmanship positions, 66 for vice-chairmanship, and 670 for councillorship positions.
The participating parties include the All Progressives Congress (APC), Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Social Democratic Party (SDP), Zenith Labour Party (ZLP), Labour Party (LP), Booth Party, National Rescue Movement (NRM), Action Alliance (AA), Accord Party, and Action People’s Party (APP).
Imam stressed the importance of political parties adhering strictly to campaign guidelines to ensure a peaceful electoral process. He warned that candidates’ conduct and public statements would be crucial to the success of the elections.
He also disclosed that NSIEC would continue other electoral activities, such as the publication of the notice of polls and the formal declaration of the election date, which will be made public on September 1, 2025.
Political parties are required to submit the names of their agents to the electoral officers in each local council.
Imam acknowledged some challenges, particularly the slow response of certain political parties to the electoral timetable, but assured the public that these issues have not affected the overall preparations.
The Inter-Party Advisory Council (IPAC) in Niger State has expressed support for NSIEC’s efforts, praising the commission for promoting transparency and inclusiveness. IPAC Chairman, Hon. Mohammed Bello Maikujeri, also commended the creation of a judicial platform for resolving electoral grievances. As the elections approach, NSIEC has urged all stakeholders to ensure a peaceful and credible process that reflects the people’s will.
