Users of the Umuahia-Bende-Arochukwu-Ohafia bridge will soon breathe a sigh of relief, as the Federal Government has appointed a new contractor, China Civil Engineering Construction Corporation (CCECC), to commence work on the collapsed parts of the road.
The new contractor was mobilized in response to an ABN TV viral video titled “How Your Area,” which revealed that the Onu Uduma Bridge, also known as the Nmuri Bridge on the federal route, was on the verge of collapsing.
The important bridge, which was previously renovated by the Federal Road Maintenance Agency (FERMA), has come under tremendous strain as a result of recurrent downpours and significant vehicle traffic, exposing it to structural concerns.
The Federal Executive Council authorized extra funding for the project, augmenting the money already allocated in 2018.
On Wednesday, CCECC equipment arrived at the impacted site, giving Ohafia residents and other road users optimism. This follows the termination of the previous contractor, Heartland, whose contract was terminated owing to quality difficulties.
Speaking about the arrival of the new contractor, Ibe Okwara Osonwa, member of the Arochukwu/Ohafia Federal Constituency, stated that the progress was the result of his engagement with the Minister of Works, David Umahi, through the Abia State Government, to ensure repairs on the road and the Nmuri Bridge to prevent total collapse.
He thanked Governor Alex Otti, his deputy, and Senator Orji Uzor Kalu for responding quickly to the road’s condition, but asked host communities to cooperate fully with the contractor to ensure the job is completed smoothly and on schedule.
