A Nigerian pilgrim, identified as Hajiya Zainab from Plateau State, has been widely praised for her honesty after returning a lost sum of $5,000—equivalent to over ₦8 million—to its rightful owner, a Russian pilgrim, during the Hajj pilgrimage in Makkah.
According to reports, Zainab discovered the money shortly after completing her prayers at Masjidul Haram, Islam’s holiest mosque. Instead of keeping the funds, she promptly reported the find to the authorities.
Through the coordinated efforts of the National Hajj Commission of Nigeria (NAHCON) and Saudi officials, the rightful owner was identified, and the money was returned.
Hon. Daiyabu Dauda, Executive Secretary of the Plateau State Pilgrims Welfare Board, confirmed the incident and commended Zainab’s integrity.
He described her actions as a remarkable display of honesty and moral character, noting that such behaviour is rare and commendable.
NAHCON also expressed pride in Zainab’s conduct, stating that her actions exemplify the values that Nigerian pilgrims are expected to uphold during the sacred journey. The commission emphasised the importance of integrity and ethical behaviour, especially during religious pilgrimages.
This incident has resonated widely, serving as a powerful reminder of the virtues of honesty and integrity. Zainab’s actions not only reflect positively on her character but also enhance the image of Nigerian pilgrims on the international stage.
