The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) has predicted a combination of sunshine and thunderstorms across various parts of the country for three consecutive days, starting from Wednesday. The weather forecast highlights varying conditions across different regions, with some areas expected to experience heavy thunderstorms while others will have mostly sunny weather.
According to NiMet, the northern region will witness sunny and partly cloudy conditions during the morning hours, but isolated thunderstorms are expected later in the day, particularly in states such as Sokoto, Katsina, and Kano. Residents are advised to stay updated on weather reports and take necessary precautions during the thunderstorms.
In the central region, including states like Abuja, Niger, and Kogi, the forecast indicates a mix of sunshine and cloudy skies, with possibilities of thunderstorms during the afternoon and evening. NiMet has advised farmers and residents to secure loose items and take shelter during storms to prevent accidents.
The southern region, particularly the coastal areas, is expected to experience cloudy skies in the morning, followed by scattered thunderstorms in the afternoon and evening. States like Lagos, Rivers, and Cross River are among those likely to experience significant rainfall. NiMet warned that there could be temporary disruptions in outdoor activities due to the weather changes.
The agency has also cautioned residents in areas prone to flooding to remain vigilant, as heavy rainfall during thunderstorms could lead to flash floods. NiMet recommends clearing drainages and avoiding low-lying areas to minimise risks associated with water accumulation.
NiMet emphasised that weather conditions during this period could change unexpectedly, so the public is encouraged to follow updates through official channels. The agency also urged local authorities to be proactive in disseminating weather information to reduce risks, especially in areas where thunderstorms are forecasted.
In addition, NiMet advised road users to be cautious while driving during rainfall to avoid accidents caused by reduced visibility and slippery roads. Motorists are encouraged to maintain safe speeds and ensure their vehicles are in good condition.
The agency reaffirmed its commitment to providing accurate and timely weather updates to help residents make informed decisions. NiMet also stressed the importance of staying weather-aware, as thunderstorms can be accompanied by strong winds and lightning, posing potential hazards to life and property.
