Nnamdi Kanu, leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), has denied any involvement in the violence and destruction that occurred in Lagos during the October 2020 #EndSARS protests.
In a video played during his ongoing trial at the Federal High Court in Abuja, Kanu stated that he had no knowledge or role in the events that transpired in Lagos.
The video, recorded during a Department of State Services (DSS) interview on July 17, 2021, was presented by the prosecution as part of their evidence. In it, Nnamdi Kanu emphasised that Lagos is not part of Biafra territory, and therefore, he could not be held responsible for incidents there.
He further asserted that if he had control over people, he would not be advocating for a referendum but would have unilaterally declared Biafra.
Kanu’s denial comes amid ongoing legal proceedings where he faces multiple charges, including terrorism. The trial, presided over by Justice James Omotosho, has been adjourned to May 14, 21, and 22 for further hearings.
The Nigerian government has previously accused IPOB and its security wing, the Eastern Security Network (ESN), of instigating violence during the #EndSARS protests.
However, Nnamdi Kanu’s legal team maintains that he is not responsible for the unrest and has called for a fair trial.
As the trial progresses, the court is expected to hear more testimonies and review additional evidence to determine Kanu’s culpability in the charges brought against him.
