The detained leader of the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, has formally apologized to the Federal High Court, Justice Binta Nyako, and Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN) Adegboyega Awomolo for his misconduct during the last proceedings of his terrorism trial.
Nnamdi Kanu, in a heartfelt plea, sought forgiveness and assured the court of his commitment to maintaining good conduct throughout the trial.
His apology was delivered in a prepared speech read by his lead counsel, former Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Mr. Kanu Agabi.
In the emotionally charged statement, Kanu specifically appealed to Justice Nyako and Awomolo, asking them to overlook his previous outbursts and criticisms made in open court.
Agabi acknowledged that while Kanu had reasons to be upset, he should not have allowed his emotions to dictate his actions.
“In his moment of anger, he criticized the Federal High Court, Justice Binta Nyako, the prosecution team, and even his own legal representatives,” Agabi stated.
“I extend an apology to Justice Binta Nyako, who did not deserve the unjust attack. I also apologize to Chief Adegboyega Awomolo, SAN, a respected legal figure who was unfairly castigated.
“I appeal for understanding and forgiveness. Kanu is a good man, though not perfect, and is advocating for the Igbo people, who are known for their resilience, courage, and ability to excel.
“Despite our differences, we must embrace reconciliation. In seeking resolution, let us choose peace over conflict,” Nnamdi Kanu urged.
