Nigeria’s oil and gas firms, between January and April 2023, flared 92.3 Million Standard Cubic Feet (mcf) of gas, projected to be worth 150.8 bn naira (N150.8 billion). The National Oil Spill Detection and Response Agency – NOSDRA – presented the data in a recent report.

Compared to the 50.3mscf of gas flared in 2022, it represents an increase of 79.5%.

The government expects the oil-producing companies responsible for the flaring to pay fines of $184.6 million (equivalent to N85.7 billion) for violating the regulations against gas flaring over four months.

The research by NOSDRA also said that the amount of gas flared over four months emitted 4.9 million tonnes of carbon dioxide and had a 9,200 gigawatt-hour potential for power generation.

According to the study, monthly gas flared amounts were 23.2 mcf, 27.1 mcf, 25.9 mcf, and 16.1 mcf in January, February, March, and April, respectively.
