The Chairman of the Lagos State Council of the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW), Alhaji Mustapha Adekunle Adio, popularly known as Tafa Sego, narrowly escaped an assassination attempt at his Surulere residence on Saturday night.
The attack occurred around 11 p.m. on Gbadamosi Close, when six armed men stormed the house in a targeted mission to eliminate the union leader. Fortunately, Tafa Sego was not at home at the time, having stepped out earlier to attend an event with associates.
The attackers reportedly tied up and beat the security guard before ransacking the residence. Despite their efforts, they were unable to locate Sego. No fatalities were recorded in the incident, but the security guard sustained injuries and has since lodged an official report with the police.
A union stakeholder, Prince Idowu Onikoyi, confirmed the incident on Monday, assuring the public that the NURTW chairman was unharmed and in good health. Officers from the Area C Police Command have visited the scene, gathered evidence, and are working on identifying the perpetrators, with the guard’s account aiding the investigation.
Local residents, shocked by the incident, have expressed concerns over rising insecurity in what was previously a peaceful neighbourhood. The attack comes at a time when Tafa Sego is reportedly pushing new reforms within the NURTW to improve welfare and operations.
