Tupac, who first arrived in the Bay Area as a teenager, found fame in 1991 as a member of the group Digital Underground. He credited his time in Marin City as a pivotal period in shaping his career. The legislation supporting the renaming cites Marin City as the place where Tupac honed his skills and gained valuable experience.
The Tupac Shakur Foundation will cover the expenses for commemorative plaques and signs that will signal the change, ensuring that his legacy and influence are properly recognized. The honorary renaming aims to remind people of Tupac’s significant contributions to Oakland’s cultural landscape and to celebrate his lasting impact on the world of art.
