Omah Lay, an award-winning Afropop artist, has revealed that he contemplated suicide during his battle with depression. In a recent interview with Hey Steph, the singer opened up about his mental health struggles and how he has integrated them into his music.
Omah Lay believes that going through depression was a religious experience, as it allowed him to connect with and help others currently experiencing similar difficulties. He added that he plans to continue creating authentic music based on his experiences.
The 25-year-old musician stated that he was “really fcked up” and on the brink of suicide but decided to use his experience to help others. He believes it takes a person who has gone through a similar situation to create music that genuinely resonates with others who are going through similar struggles.
According to Omah Lay, many afrobeats artists avoid tackling severe issues and instead focus on creating hype music. However, he feels that this approach is causing the actual music to die out, and he hopes to use his experiences to create meaningful and impactful music that can help others.
