Omoyele Sowore, the presidential candidate of the African Action Congress (AAC) in the 2023 elections, alongside other activists, is currently leading a protest in Abuja to demand better welfare for retired police officers.
The demonstration, organised by the Nigerian Union of Retired Police Officers, seeks to pressure the government to remove retired police personnel from the contributory pension scheme, which they describe as discriminatory and harmful to their members.
The protesters had earlier vowed to picket the National Assembly complex before proceeding to the Force Headquarters to press their demands.
They argue that the current pension arrangement has subjected retirees to severe financial hardship, leading to suffering and even deaths among their ranks. The retired officers are calling for immediate reforms to ensure they receive their rightful benefits without further delay.
However, the Police Community Relations Committee (PCRC) has cautioned against the protest, urging the aggrieved retirees to return to dialogue with the authorities.
The PCRC described the demonstration as an attempt to undermine the Inspector General of Police (IGP) and the administration of President Bola Tinubu, warning that such actions could disrupt public order rather than resolve the issue.
Despite these appeals, the protesters remain determined to make their grievances known, insisting that years of unaddressed complaints have left them with no choice but to take to the streets.
