All unlawful and unlicensed lottery and gaming operators and agents in the state have been urged by Ondo State Attorney General Dr Kayode Ajulo, SAN, to immediately regularize their activities or risk legal repercussions.
According to him, the action taken demonstrates the government’s steadfast dedication to following the law and safeguarding the rights of its people.
In response to the Supreme Court’s ruling that declared the National Lottery Act unconstitutional, the Ondo Attorney General issued the order in a statement in Akure on Monday.
Ajulo praised the Supreme Court for upholding state governments’ constitutional right to control lottery and gaming operations in their jurisdictions in the statement he provided to reporters.
According to Ajulo:
“The landmark judgement, delivered in suit No. SC/1/2008 between the Attorney General of Lagos State & others and the Attorney General of the Federation represents a watershed victory for constitutionalism, federalism and the rule of law.
“This Supreme Court decision is a monumental affirmation that the regulation of lotteries and gaming is a residual matter, firmly within the jurisdiction of state governments. It reinforces the principles of true federalism, empowering States to effectively manage their affairs.”
