Ooni- Pete Edochie- Kanayo O. Kanayo

The Yoruba monarch, Oba Adeyeye Ogunwusi Enitan, the Ooni of Ife, has become a hot topic on social media after a video surfaced showing a cordial exchange of greetings between him and veteran actors Pete Edochie and Kanayo O. Kanayo. The encounter took place during Elizabeth Jack Rich’s 40th birthday dinner party.

The video, shared by Kanayo on his Instagram page, captures the moment both actors approached the Ooni’s table at the event and engaged in the popular Igbo back handshake with the traditional ruler. Kanayo expressed his excitement in the caption, stating,

Last night was awesome @peteedochie @babarex0 @chidimokeme and the very outstanding His Royal Majesty, Oba Adeyeye Ogunwusi Enitan, Ooni of Ife.”

While the video garnered attention and positive reactions from many, it also sparked mixed responses online. Some netizens voiced their concerns, deeming the interaction disrespectful, while others placed blame on the Ooni.

One commenter expressed,

If you don’t respect yourself, no one will. If the real and former king were on the seat, this nonsense would not happen… I respect the work and talent of the legend but if the king starts respecting the throne and acting like a king, this madness will not happen. If anything, remove your cap.”

Another user emphasized the importance of respecting traditions, stating,

Please always respect traditions; this is disrespectful to our culture.”

On the other hand, there were those who defended the actors’ actions, explaining that the three handshake given to the Oba is a traditional greeting for esteemed individuals in Igbo culture. One commenter shared,

They gave the Oba a three-handshake, which is how great men are traditionally greeted in Igboland. Do you expect Chief Pete Edochie to prostrate for the Oba? It’s not done; we are NdIgbo.”

Amid the differing opinions,  the video has sparked discussions on cultural norms and protocols. Nevertheless, the Ooni of Ife continues to be a significant figure, commanding attention and provoking conversations wherever he goes.
