The Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC) of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) in Osun State, Dr. Mutiu Agboke, has underscored the indispensable role of the media in ensuring credible electoral processes.
Speaking during a visit by the management of the Nigerian Television Authority (NTA), Osogbo, to the INEC state office on Tuesday, Agboke described the media as a fundamental pillar for successful elections.
Agboke urged media organisations in the state to use their platforms to combat electoral malpractices, particularly vote-buying and election violence.
He emphasised that INEC relies heavily on media partnerships to execute its mandate effectively. “Without the media, we are doing nothing. The media is crucial to our success in electoral activities,” he stated.
The REC called for stronger collaboration between INEC and media houses, noting that such partnerships enhance public engagement and transparency.
He praised NTA for its pivotal role during the 2023 general elections, describing the broadcaster as a key ally. “NTA, being the largest network in Africa, is a critical partner. We will continue to work together to ensure electoral integrity,” Agboke added.
With the Continuous Voter Registration (CVR) exercise underway and the 2026 Osun governorship election approaching, Agboke urged the media to help prevent underage and foreign nationals from participating in voter registration. He also advised eligible voters to register at their nearest local government offices.
In response, NTA Osogbo’s General Manager, Abdulrazaq Ajala, reaffirmed the station’s commitment to supporting INEC’s initiatives. “NTA and INEC are one.
We are ready to broadcast all INEC activities to ensure public awareness and transparency,” Ajala assured. He stressed the need to strengthen the partnership further to promote voter education and credible elections.
The meeting highlighted the shared commitment of both institutions to fostering democratic processes through effective media engagement and public sensitisation.
