Ademola Adeleke, Governor of Osun State, has announced that mining operations in the state will commence in 2024.

Governor Adeleke said that environmental regulations were being enforced in the state’s mining industry, noted that efforts to clean up the damaged environment were underway.

The governor made these remarks in Osogbo, in response to a status brief submitted by the Special Adviser on Mining and Solid Minerals, Prof Lukman Adekilekun Jimoda on Thursday.

He remembered that a year ago, he committed to restructure the mining industry in order to maximise the state’s benefits from its significant mineral riches.

While stating that mining activities in the state will no longer tolerate environmental degradation, Governor Adeleke praised the advances and victories his government had achieved in the mining industry.

The Governor stated that he was particularly pleased with the enforcement of environmental standards.

“We are recording an increase in revenue generation. Accumulated service charges on our licences have been cleared. We are at the tail end of upgrading our exploration leases to mining leases. This will bring more investors.

“I am elated to report that we have fulfilled that promise within a year of assuming office,” he said.

Earlier, Prof Jimoda told Governor Adeleke that no effort would be spared to achieve his administration’s mining sector reform.
