Governor Seyi Makinde of Oyo State has formally notified the State House of Assembly of his plan to embark on a one-month vacation, commencing on August 29 and concluding on September 29.

The governor’s intention was communicated through an official letter addressed to the legislature, which was received and subsequently read during an emergency plenary session held on Tuesday. The session was presided over by the Speaker of the House, Adebo Ogundoyin.

In his correspondence, Governor Makinde explicitly stated that he will officially resume his official duties on Monday, September 29, following the conclusion of his leave.

Speaker Ogundoyin confirmed that the governor’s action is in strict compliance with constitutional requirements, specifically citing Section 190(1) of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.

This constitutional provision mandates a state governor to transmit a written notice to the House of Assembly before proceeding on any vacation, ensuring proper governmental continuity.

A key element of the governor’s letter was the formal request to hand over the responsibilities and authority of his office to his deputy. Consequently, Barrister Bayo Lawal, the Deputy Governor, is set to assume the role of Acting Governor for the entire duration of the vacation.

This transfer of power ensures that the state’s executive functions will continue uninterrupted while Governor Makinde is on leave.

The governor’s notification provides a clear timeline for the transfer of authority and reaffirms the administration’s commitment to adhering to democratic principles and constitutional governance.
