PDP governors forum distances itself from opposition coalition ahead of 2027

Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Governors Forum has dissociated itself from a coalition of opposition politicians reportedly forming ahead of the 2027 presidential election.

Led by Bauchi State Governor, Bala Mohammed, the Forum made its position clear during a meeting held in Ibadan, the Oyo State capital, on Monday. The governors emphasized that the PDP would not be part of any alliance or coalition for now as it focuses on rebuilding the party internally.

The Forum also took a decisive stance in the ongoing leadership tussle within the party by affirming the Deputy National Secretary, Setonji Koshoedo, as the Acting National Secretary, deepening the crisis over the party’s authentic leadership structure.

This development comes in the wake of an announcement by PDP’s former presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar, on the formation of an opposition alliance. The coalition is believed to include notable figures such as former Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, and ex-Kaduna State governor, Nasir El-Rufai, among others.

Atiku had said the coalition’s goal was to unseat President Bola Tinubu in 2027. His announcement followed El-Rufai’s defection from the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) to the Social Democratic Party (SDP), citing the APC’s erosion of internal democracy under Tinubu’s leadership.

Adding to the unfolding political drama, former SDP presidential candidate Adewale Adebayo claimed Atiku, Obi, and other opposition leaders were in talks to formally join the SDP. Adebayo suggested that if the politicians could align with the party’s ideology and structure, they stood a strong chance of defeating and retiring Tinubu and the APC.

In a related twist, New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) chieftain, Buba Galadima, alleged that El-Rufai was merely acting as a placeholder for Atiku within the SDP in case the PDP refused to grant him its presidential ticket for 2027.
