The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has confirmed active efforts to reintegrate former Anambra State Governor and 2023 Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi into its fold.
Deputy National Publicity Secretary Ibrahim Abdullahi described Obi as a “product of the PDP” and a significant political asset, emphasising his ability to secure over six million votes in the last presidential election despite alleged electoral manipulation.
Speaking on Arise News, Abdullahi acknowledged Obi’s strong performance in the 2023 polls, where he won twelve states, including the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Abuja, despite finishing third behind Atiku Abubakar of the PDP and winner Bola Tinubu of the All Progressives Congress (APC).
“Peter Obi is our product, and the PDP indeed wants to get him back. He is a great asset for any political party,” Abdullahi stated, underscoring Obi’s appeal to young voters and urban populations.
Peter Obi, who served as the PDP’s vice presidential candidate in 2019, left the party ahead of the 2023 elections, citing internal disagreements and a lack of transparency in the nomination process.
His subsequent campaign under the Labour Party galvanised a youth-driven movement, the “Obidients,” which disrupted Nigeria’s traditional two-party dominance.
Abdullahi admitted that the PDP underestimated Obi’s influence, noting that his ability to mobilise support despite institutional obstacles demonstrated his political capital.
The party now views his potential return as a strategic advantage ahead of the 2027 elections, particularly as opposition figures, including Atiku Abubakar, realign under new coalitions.
While Peter Obi has reaffirmed his commitment to the Labour Party, he has also expressed openness to collaboration with broader opposition alliances. The PDP’s overture signals a recognition of his enduring appeal and the need to consolidate opposition forces against the ruling APC.
