Plateau State Governor Caleb Mutfwang has reaffirmed his commitment to securing justice for the families of wedding guests tragically killed by a mob in Mangun District last month.
The victims, travelling from Zaria, Kaduna State, to attend a wedding in Quan Pa’an LGA, lost their way and were mistakenly identified as terrorists by local residents. The violent attack claimed 22 lives and left 11 others injured.
During an interview with BBC Hausa Service on Saturday, Governor Mutfwang described the incident as symptomatic of longstanding inter-religious and ethnic tensions in the region.
While acknowledging that such deep-seated conflicts require time to resolve, he emphasised that his administration is taking concrete steps to address the recent tragedy and prevent future violence.
The governor revealed that 22 suspects are currently in custody in connection with the attack, while the injured victims have since returned home. His administration has initiated reconciliation efforts, including dispatching a special delegation led by the Emir of Wase to offer condolences to the Emir of Zaria, where the victims originated.
“We remain in close consultation with Zaria’s traditional leaders to determine how best to support the bereaved families and assist those recovering from injuries,” Mutfwang stated. The governor stressed that these measures form part of broader initiatives to foster peace and ensure accountability, working in collaboration with Kaduna State authorities.
The incident has drawn attention to the dangers faced by travellers in regions plagued by communal tensions. Mutfwang’s assurances come amid calls for improved security and conflict resolution mechanisms to protect innocent civilians caught in such volatile situations.
