Idowu Owohunwa, Assistant Inspector-General of Police, Federal Criminal Investigation Department, FCID, Ikoyi, Lagos, has emphasised the importance of police not detaining suspects for longer than is legally allowed.

Owohunwa disclosed this during a visit to the Police Special Fraud Unit, one of the police units under his command, on Friday. He investigated the cells to determine the number of inmates and the conditions in which they were confined.

According to a statement issued on Friday by the department’s spokesman, ASP Aminat Mayegun, Owohunwa was concerned about the length of days some of the suspects had spent in the SFU cell following the inspection and interaction.

He warned the Commissioner of Police in charge of the unit not to extend the custody duration.

Owohunwa stressed the significance of consistent cell surveillance in preventing prison violence.

The AIG emphasised the importance of preserving citizens’ rights in custody, stating that his visit should serve as a reminder to police officers to ensure humane treatment and the fundamental rights of individuals in jail.

Owohunwa advised all sectional heads to take a proactive approach by regularly visiting the cells under their jurisdiction to ensure justice and the preservation of human rights.
