The six South-West states under the Development Agenda for Western Nigeria (DAWN) Commission have agreed to convene an education summit this year.

The summit, which will take place in the first part of the year at the International Conference Centre, University of Ibadan, will be organised by a joint institution established by the DAWN Commission.

The commission made available a concept note to Saturday PUNCH, which read:

“All Ministries of Education in the South-West States, State Universal Basic Education Board, Universal Basic Education Commission, Abuja; UK’s Foreign Commonwealth and Development Office; Parent- Teachers Association; Nigeria Union of Teachers; and Association for Formidable Education Development are expected to be in attendance.

“Other participants are: low-cost private schools’ group; Teachers Registration Council of Nigeria; Finland Ambassador for Education; Developing Effective Private Education, Nigeria; Town Unions and Groups in the Southwest Region; Southwest NGOs working in education and education related activities; World Bank; UNICEF.”

According to the statement, the summit’s goal is to increase collaboration between governmental and non-governmental institutions while also providing a platform for open debate and collective problem solutions.

It also attempted to identify and highlight successful primary education methods in the South-West Region, as well as identify impediments to functional primary education in the Southwest.
