President Bola Tinubu has expressed his profound condolences to the passengers affected by the derailment of the Abuja-Kaduna train, which occurred on Tuesday.
The incident took place along the Kaduna corridor shortly after the train departed from Abuja at approximately 11 am en route to Kaduna.
In a statement posted on his official social media handle, President Tinubu conveyed his deep sadness upon receiving reports of the accident, even while he was attending to matters in Brazil.
He extended his heartfelt prayers to those injured, their families, and all passengers who endured the distressing experience. The President assured the public that he is being continuously updated on the latest developments and is awaiting a comprehensive briefing to ensure swift action and the provision of necessary support for all those affected.
He further emphasised that the Nigerian Railway Corporation (NRC) is actively addressing the situation and that all necessary steps are expected to be taken to prevent a recurrence of such incidents in the future.
In a related development, the Managing Director of the Nigerian Railway Corporation, Kayode Opeifa, appeared on a national television program on Wednesday to address the incident. During his appearance, he offered a public apology and took full responsibility for the derailment in his capacity as chief executive.
Opeifa assured the nation that the ongoing investigation into the cause of the accident would be thorough and transparent, with a firm commitment that it would not be swept under the carpet, underscoring that there is no indifference when it comes to safety matters.
