President Bola Tinubu has approved the reappointment of Alhaji Abubakar Sadiq Yelwa as the Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of the National Hydroelectric Power Producing Areas Development Commission (NHYPPADEC) for a second and final four-year term.
The decision was announced in a statement by Segun Imohiosen, Director of Information and Public Relations in the Office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation.
The renewal of Yelwa’s appointment aligns with the provisions of Section 93 of the Electricity Act 2023, which governs the operations and leadership of the commission. President Tinubu commended Yelwa’s performance during his first term and urged him to build on the commission’s achievements.
The president also emphasised the need for greater innovation and dedication in fulfilling NHYPPADEC’s mandate, which focuses on the development of communities in hydroelectric power-producing regions across Nigeria.
NHYPPADEC plays a critical role in addressing the socio-economic and environmental challenges faced by communities affected by hydroelectric power projects.
The commission is tasked with implementing development initiatives, improving infrastructure, and ensuring that host communities benefit from the nation’s hydroelectric resources.
Yelwa’s reappointment reflects the federal government’s confidence in his leadership and its commitment to continuity in driving the commission’s objectives.
The president’s directive underscores the importance of sustained efforts in delivering impactful projects and programs that enhance the welfare of residents in hydroelectric power-producing areas.
The announcement has been met with expectations for renewed progress under Yelwa’s stewardship, with stakeholders hopeful that his experience will further advance the commission’s goals in promoting sustainable development and equitable benefits for affected communities.
